Arniko, the Great Architect From Nepal

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 27, 2011

Nepal’s temples, stupas, and many more structures are examples of this nation being a former leader in architecture.

Today’s generation sees Nepal as a poor country lacking high-tech and engineering skills. But Nepal’s past shows skilled manpower and a highly developed society. One example of this skilled manpower is Arniko, the greatest architect of Nepalese history.

Arniko was forced to live in China, where he drew great respect. He made lots of sculptural works which are still a great asset of China.

Nepalese author Satya Mohan Joshi who has researched Arniko said his works in China are really a great challenge to modern engineering. The works he did in the 13th century are unbelievable.

Nepalese history doesn’t have any proof of where in Nepal Arniko grew up. But Joshi claims Arniko was from Patan, a famous place for sculpture.

Many Nepali architects made statues of special historical importance. However, Arniko was the only one who became famous not only in Nepal but also in Tibet, China, Mongolia and as far as Indonesia.

During Arniko’s time, renowned Mongol emperor Kublai Khan was a great lover of art and architecture.

He wanted to build a golden stupa (a Buddhist shrine) in Lhasa for his teacher Pags-pa. In 1260, he decided to ask Nepal to send a skilled architect to supervise the work.  Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 24, 2011

Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 24, 2011

Read the rest of this entry »

India, Nepal security talks begin in Kathmandu

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 22, 2011

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s new Maoist-led government began its first bilateral interaction with India on Thursday at a senior level, with security talks kicking off here ahead of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s proposed visit to New Delhi.

Led by India’s joint secretary in the home ministry, KK Mittal, the visiting delegation held talks with Mittal’s counterpart, Sudhir Shah and senior Nepali officials, at Radisson Hotel.

The talks took place after a gap of four years, and the agenda is expected to include clamping down on cross-border crimes like smuggling, trafficking and the transport of fake Indian currency to Indian cities via the open border.

Two years ago, when home secretary-level talks were held in Kathmandu, India’s GK Pillai had put major emphasis on combating the growing trade in fake Indian currency that has its origin in Pakistani cities Karachi and Islamabad.

The two-day talks will be followed by meetings between the two home secretaries ahead of Bhattarai’s visit to India once he returns from the 66th UN General Assembly in New York.

Though India has pledged to build a training academy for Nepal Police in Panauti and a police training centre in Bharatpur, progress has been slow due to disagreements on the employment of Indian firms for the projects.

India has also agreed to boost the capacity-building of police, armed police, customs officials and district administration officials.

Nepal earthquake: Biggest earthquake in 80 years kills nine

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 19, 2011

The nine ft wall fencing the compound of the British Embassy in the Lainchaur area of the capital, close to the Indian Embassy, collapsed. Nine people were killed, while over 100 people had received injuries with hundreds of houses and buildings collapsing.

Biggest earthquake in 80 years in Nepal and in 20 years in the Himalayan Region.

ECONOMICTIMES:

KATHMANDU: After initial panic and chaos, prayers began to be offered in Nepal with the realisation that

An eight-year-old child was among three killed after the wall of the British embassy in Nepal collapsed

the earthquake that hit its eastern region and capital city Kathmandu along with India on Sunday could have wreaked far greater devastation, being the biggest in almost eight decades. Nine people were killed.

As the resilient Himalayan state began to limp back to normal Monday following a trembler measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, the toll had risen to at least nine with the news of another unconfirmed casualty, while over 100 people had received injuries with hundreds of houses and buildings collapsing.

The cramped capital, full of decrepit houses and little adherence to building regulations, suffered with three people dying in a wall collapse while over 50 were injured trying to jump down from windows and balconies in the panic.

Police said Monday the nine ft wall fencing the compound of the British Embassy in the Lainchaur area of the capital, close to the Indian Embassy, collapsed Sunday evening, soon after the jolt, smashing down on a two-wheeler, a car and a pedestrian.

Sajan Shrestha, a 38-year-old security guard employed by the Danish government’s aid agency Danida was riding past the embassy on his two-wheeler with his teenaged daughter Anisha when the concrete wall fell on them, injuring both severely.  Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 14, 2011

BBC News

London Magic Store's page on eBay Mr Lopez estimates that the value of his business is now more than £1m

A Nepalese man who moved to London as a teenager has been confirmed as Britain’s biggest seller on the online auction website eBay.

Sudip Gautam, now known as Dario Lopez, came to England in November 2002 with his mother to join his father.

He set up a mobile phone accessory company which now has a staff of 13 and an annual turnover of more than £3m.

Mr Lopez has opened his first shop in London and aims long term to set up a chain of stores across the world.

An eBay spokeswoman confirmed him as the site’s biggest individual seller – despite intense competition from chain stores – with more than 600,000 sales in under five years.

Expansion

Originally from the district of Gulmi, about 250km (155 miles) west of Kathmandu Mr Lopez began his business at the age of 13.

“I lied to my mother by saying that I needed to pay for something and used her credit card to register a website,” he told the BBC.

“If I’d told her that I needed £10 to register a website domain name, she wouldn’t have let me use the card. It was enough to enable me to start selling sim cards on eBay in 2004.” Read the rest of this entry »

China’s involvement in SAARC crucial: PM

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 14, 2011

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Sept 14: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Wednesday said that China´s involvement in SAARC has become crucial in view of its geo-proximity to the sub-continent and rapid economic growth.

“China neighbors five out of eight SAARC countries. Therefore, its involvement in SAARC has become crucial,” the prime minister said on Wednesday.

The prime minister further added that South Asian countries and China “must unite” to eradicate poverty in the region, which is home to about half of the world population.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Second Convention of China and South Asia Forum of Organizations in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the prime minister also stressed on Nepal´s interest in linking South Asia and China.

“Nepal would like to act like a vibrant bridge between these two historic regions, rather than merely playing the role of a traditional buffer state,” the prime minister said.

UN supports APECF’s Lumbini plan: Xiao Wunan

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 14, 2011

REPUBLICA

There has been great excitement, debate and controversy about the plans of the Asia Pacific Exchange and Cooperation Foundation (APECF) to mobilize investment of US$3 billion for the development of Lumbini as a Special Development Zone (SDZ). Purna Basnet caught up with Xiao Wunan, executive vice-chairman of APECF in Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong last Friday to shed more lights on the issue.

EXCERPTS:

What is the current position of the Lumbini plan?

It is in the planning stage. Some reports said China is investing US$3 billion but without a feasibility study no one can invest such a big amount. We will hire a professional team for planning, which will take about one year. We hope that will happen faster but it will certainly take at least six months. APECF needs a concrete idea to come to Lumbini. APECF signed the MoU with UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Beijing, for feasibility study. UNIDO is a consultant for planning and framework designer of the project.

Was a MoU actually signed with UNIDO?

Yes, but there has been some misunderstanding and distortion in this regard. The misunderstanding was that UNIDO would get a slice of the profits. But that’s not the case; UNIDO was acting as a consultant for planning.

But the UNIDO headquarters refused to recognize the MoU. What is your take on that?

I cannot answer this question on the record.

Don´t you think that the MoU signed by APECF and UNIDO in Beijing is against Nepal’s national sovereignty?

It is a part of the process. When we wanted to do this project, we needed to get the approval of Nepal. Before signing the MoU with UNIDO, I met more than 10 members of the cabinet of Nepal, including the finance and deputy prime minister and culture minister. UNIDO as a consultant was advising us on whether or not to go ahead with this project and how to carry it out. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on September 12, 2011

Read the rest of this entry »
